I had one case one day where a lingering side effect from a smurf attack on
my ISP was causing me problems. I could see broadcast traffic on my
segment, but nothing was coming in and nothing would go out. Call to the
ISP, they rebooted the router serving as my gateway, and everything was
aright again. Seems that for some reason, I was the only person who had
reported lost connectivity, but they rebooted the router just as a
preventative measure. Neither me nor my ISP knows why it lost connectivity
like this. A lot of people think that routers/switches never go down.
That's the case much of the time, but you do get occassional hiccups that a
restart is required to fix.
