http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ has a very nice reveiw of many of the
low cost Cable Modem Routers (with built in "Firewalling capabilities"). The
range of protection varies widely and to my knowledge only one that I have
seen so far claims to have "stateful inspection" by SOHOWare, sorry I forgot
the name, but it is their new product for $179. The advantage to the
$100-$200 router market is Size (that old clunker can take up a bunch more
space than a small four port router/switch, Noise (Most of the routers are
far quieter than the 486 counterparts, which can be a blessing a
technologically overburdened small apartment, and maintainence (recompile
what...). Many come with a default "Filter Set" that will stop remote
administration of your device. Further Filter configuration is highly
recomended, search the archives, but at least source routed packets and
spoofing should be dropped. Do your homework and you can significantly
increase the security posture of your home network.

Subject: Benchmarks of $100 home firewalls?

Has anyone done any benchmarks of the $100 home NAT/DHCP boxes sold
by the likes of Linksys et al?

I installed one of these on a 128K line and I haven't noticed any
performance decrease in regular home office/play usage.
