Michael,

I have used both this product and the NetGear RT314 Cable/DSL router. For my
money the Netgear was the better choice. The NetGear has both a web based
interface as well as a very good command line interface. The router has a
serial interface which allows for management when an Ethernet connection is
not available. In addition there is a reasonably equipped IP filter feature
which allows for address hiding of internal hosts while still providing
security for your network. I did like the LinkSys as well, but I felt that
the NetGear was more of a configurable device than the LinkSys.

I have the NetGear router continuously for seven months now and I have NEVER
had to reboot it sincle loading the last version of the software. I have
tested the router/firewall and NAT features using CyberCop, Steve Gibson's
Shield's Up and NMAP programs. In all of these cases the results were more
than satisfactory.

I also installed Zone Alarm on the systems that I allow access to from the
outside through the SUA menu on the NetGear. This added protection has kept
me relatively secure for the most part.

My Linux systems run IPCHAINS on the internal network as these systems are
hosting a MUD, FTP and HTTP servers for my domain as well.

I hope that this helps. Please refer to the March feature of Home Network
Pro for more information. http://www.homenetworkpro.com
