The typical thing is that there is no typical internet datacenter....
Maybe you can give information on expected traffic (Bit/s), encryption needs (VPN
throughput Bit/s), type of data to be supplied (static web pages, dynamical
database - if so, what is the data change rate (bytes/day)?
Possible concepts include load balancing firewall software (e.g.
Rainfinity&Checkpoint), load balancing switches (e.g. Alteon, Big5), distributed
servers and data replication (learn from Microsoft's diseaster), ....

Security does not stem from software, hardware or equipment - but from the
brain(s)
behind it. It is like with brick-and-mortar firewalls: all the stuff can only
fend off
annoyances - the real threats are only delayed to help the
experts/firefighters ride in
(hopefully) in time.

Please only choose the solution you have expertize in - not "the industry
standard" one.
If you are under attack your only advantage is your better knowledge of the local
stuff. So make damn sure you are very familiar with all quirks of the products
you
use andtheir local setup.
Bye
