I feel a repost of Ben Nagy's e-mail on this topic from last summer is
particularly appropriate at this time (see below). I've been thinking the
same thing lately, and maybe it is time we ask the moderator to be a little
more selective in letting things through to the list. And people, please
learn to use a search engine before saying "Can anyone tell me where to find
info on topic X?"

Apologies if my earlier messages came through in HTML format. Got a new
system, and didn't use my brain to recall that I needed to turn off that
damn "feature." I've got it fixed now.

Ben's post from July 5, 2000:

Look, I hate to be a grumpy old man _way_ before my time but I think we're
seeing a heap more total misses in terms of content relevance.

Far be it from me to make authoritatrian statements to an unmoderated list,
but:

Putting "This is off topic but..." at the top of a message doesn't make it
on topic.

We're here to talk about firewalls. Fine, often that stretches to security
as a tangent. Fair enough.

However, if I wanted to talk about general NT questions I'd join an NT list.
If I wanted to know about Sendmail configs I'd read the batbook or join a
Sendmail list. It's NOT HARD to go and find an appropriate forum for your
question.

I (personally) don't think this list is a helpdesk. A firewalls helpdesk,
maybe...;)

Yes, it's early in the morning here - I'm in my curmudgeonly phase.

Maybe Mouss (like a lot of people that contribute meaningful content to the
list) are a little tried of seeing questions on the list that the asker
could
easy answer themselves with a minor amount of effort. I too appreciate
Mouss' contributions and I hope people appreciate mine but personally I
regard "no brainer" posts like this one as spam.

Half the adventure of working with computers is discovering how they work
and how to make them work. Seems like an increasing number of posts on the
list are from people that don't want to put forth that effort. For crying
out loud, Google returns over 35 different "Internet Glossary" pages. How
hard could this be?

Well I'm at it, I might as well mention posts with no subject. These are
particularly annoying because you have to look at the message to see if it's
something you can contribute to. I consider these spam too and drop them
unceremoniously into the bit bucket.
