The certification is quite new so it does not have the market penetration of a
CISSP or the Cisco/Checkpoint etc. training.
The CISSP is more theoretical and goes to theory of a large number of areas but
has few concrete examples to examine.
The GCIA certificate goes a lot into practical areas and requires a large depth
but each track is fairly narrow.
Check the SANS/GIAC web site for details and cost of taking exams without
training. The training is certainly worth it if you are at all unsure of the
subject material.
Read the practicals online to see what is minimum required. Read the honours
to see what is wanted.

I see, so the exams are independant of the course. I know most of the topics
covered in the Security essentails course so perhaps I can just take the exam
.... ;-)

Do you find that this certification helps or helped you in securing a better
position in the industry ?

Thanks
Mark

I have completed and passed the GIAC Intrusion detection course. The course
is fairly good but the certification is excellent. It requires quite a bit
of detailed work to achieve. First a written exam that asks for analysis in
depth of various topics, then online multiple choice exams to determine
mastery of TCP/IP and the particular topic.
The course is not necessary for the exam but it covers it well. Look at the
curriculum for the security essentials track at the SANS web site and see
if you understand each topic well. If you have any trouble, then take the
     course.

          Hi all,

Has anyone completed any of the GIAC courses. I am considering doing
them to obtain certification in the security field, but I want to know
if its worth while. The price is pretty steep and I have to travel to
get to the destination as well. The first one that I would attend
would either be the "Security Essentials" or Auditing Networks.

          Thanks
          Mark
