Well, the NetScreen appliances operate in Layer 2 
forwarding mode (bridging) when they are in 
transparent mode.  And they have very functional H/A 
capabilities... In their new version 2.6 code, they now 
have the ability to monitor "upstream" 
and "downstream" paths by pinging various 
endpoints.  Failover is very fast and fully stateful.
