Hi all,
I'm a new list member and have had a very interesting hack attempt in
the last few minutes on my laptop.
It's a G3 Mac running OS 9, with norton personal firewall installed.
The firewall notified me that there was a denied attempt on port 25
via SMTP "common attack port" service, using TCP. There were 5
attempts in all over 30 seconds - all denied.
I then ran a whois lookup and was surprised to see that the address
it was coming from was the same IP address as my own assigned to me
by my dialup isp !
As an interesting coincidence, this morning I received an e-mail with
the W32/Magistr@MM virus attached.
Of course I did not open the attachment and deleted it immediately.
It's a windows only virus, and we use macs anyway. The mac version of
virex seems to let it thru, even running the latest DAT files.
Strangely though, the CFGWIZ32.EXE file had a quicktime icon on it.
Any other time I've received it it has had a blank icon on the file.
Could this be a new strain of W32/Magistr@MM ?
-Adam
