I have a GCIA and I am on the GCIA Board of Directors.
Go to the SANS site at http://www.sans.org for links to contents of these
certifications.
You can do a home study for these. Certification involves writing a paper on
the subject based on a set of 4 or 5 in-depth questions. Once the paper has
passed, it then involves multiple-choice questions in areas like TCP/IP,
networking and the particular area. Previous papers are at the SANS site so
you can see what is required for passing.
These are very good pratically oriented courses and tests and seem
well-received. They are what you need to know at the front lines for the
specialities.
The complmentary certications are things like the CISSP
(http://www.ISC2.org)which are management/theoretical oriented.
