my timeout command: "timeout xlate 3:00:00 conn 1:00:00 half-closed 0:10:00
udp 0:02:00
                           timeout rpc 0:10:00 h323 0:05:00
                     timeout uauth 0:05:00 absolute"
it a unix machine.

What does the PIX log say?

A "broken pipe" is a "catch all" type FTPd error. It could be one of a 
number of things depending on the implementation  Have you tried the same 
download using a different FTP client?

If this happens when you are transferring really large files you might want 
to look at your xlate timers.  I'd really suggest checking the PIX logs 
first (and comparing them to the FTP logs) to see what the sequence of 
events involves looks like.
