Windows XP comes in two versions- Home and Professional. Both are built on
the NT kernel. XP Home is the replacement for home Windows operating systems
such as Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME (all of which were built on
DOS). XP Home is significantly limited in its capabilities with relation to
participation in NT/2000/.Net domains as it is not intended to be a
corporate desktop. XP Professional is the next version of NT
Workstation/Windows 2000 Professional, has full functionality with relation
to NT/2000/.Net domains, and is intended to be a corporate desktop OS.

.Net servers are the next versions of Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000
Advanced Server and Windows 2000 Datacenter server. While the .Net name is
assigned to them, it is not to be confused with the .Net programming
platforms.

Whistler was the code name for both XP and .Net servers for a time. Briefly,
MS was reported to be planning to call the servers "Windows 2002 <server
OS>". Both are defunct.

To summarize:
XP = client
.Net Server, .Net Advanced Server and .Net Datacenter Server = next server
versions.

Hope this helps,

Laura
