I think you are looking for a more longterm solutions, as you are not
going to leave yourself unprotected as you take on mmore direct potential
risks internally <services now outsourced such as your e-mail issue>.
Any of the recent directions at linux/*BSD alternatives offered in
similiar requests will do you well here. though some have pointed at
linux solutions offering limited iphains type packet filtering
capabilities, this is not nor does it have to be the case. It depends
upon your skills and the research you do and the needs you define. There
are even in the linux realm, more stateful and proxied capabilities
available.
