Hi,

it is very simple with Intel PRO or some Compaq NICs, with Compaq you get
un Icon on Control Panel to make this configurations. It usually is named
team ou merge (it's the same). After you install the drivers it will let
you choose if you want load balance or failover. The IP will be the same.
If you configure them correctly you only need to give one IP. Sometimes you
need first to give one IP to each NIC and then you create the team. After
that only one IP will be used. The other IP will not exist, will not
replay. It is very important that both NICs be conected to the hub/switch
because (obviously for its porpose) of the internal tests of the software
thar is mantaining the loadbalance or failover.

To explain the process of having two NICs each one with IP and a third
virtual one (this is not your case), we must have first some software to
configure that and then we need to configure mac-multicast on the switch.
The switch automatically learns the mac-address of each nic and we must
configure the third IP (the virtual one) with some mac-multicast address on
each port. Of course that the some software that created de virtual IP must
also choose (like does any kind of heartbit/loadbalance protocol) wich node
will acept that session and discard it on the other node. Normaly, that
session will continue with the real IP of the node that accepted the
session). This is very used in firewalls with more than one node working in
cluster with load balance.
