We do run Mailman and the intercept option is turned on. The problems are as in this case the user misspelled the word -or- more commonly the request is in mime format. I don't know of any mailing list software that understands mime (enough to strip out commands anyhow).
Most of the unsubscribe notes could have been handled by the users with out operator intervention. Each list post includes a pointer to the web page where you can unsubscrbe, however the actual entry point for unsubscrbing is a little hidden, as was pointed out in this thread you need to enter your email address in the box next to "Edit Option". Note: the email address -must- be the address you are subscribed under, not where you happen to be reading your email currently. From there it's straight forward on how to unsubscribe. There is only one situation I can think of where operator help is essential, if the user's email address has changed and he/she has forgotten the password. Then they can't even get it emailed to them to start the unsubscription process. One area I can be of no help at all is folks there are actualy subscribed to a list remailer (a list that subscribes to our list). I have'nt gotten one of these in a few weeks but they seem to be the hardest to convince. Which does make sence I keep telling them they are not subscribed and they keep getting list mail. I have'nt had much luck in getting them to send sample posts to figure out what going one. To summarize: 1) Use the webpage to unsubscribe (http://lists.gnac.net/mailman/listinfo/firewalls), it's easy. 2) Don't use Mime formated email, it looks pretty but it screws up more than it helps so turn it off. Also it bloats the size of the email for people with out Mime compatible mail readers, I've seen one line messages take a couple of kilobytes because of all the default http headers. 3) The same goes for digital signatures, most mailing lists break the signature (by adding text to the message) so their useless and add to bloat. 4) When you do need to send a note to the list managers do include some details. Sample messages/posts/errors come in very handy in trouble shooting these type of problems. 5) To answer Matthew Carpenter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, I think this thread has been beat to death, as has the poster. 6) To anser Ben Nagy, there are aprox 12,000 subscribers at this time.
