True, but L2TP (or plain PPP if you want to get goofy) inside IPsec 
gets you layer 2 forwarding with IPsec protection, and I for one 
prefer the protection that a proper IPsec implementation gives me 
over that of PPTP any day. 

I wouldn't even run PPTP to do "home" stuff. But, then again, my
home network is probably more secure than what I have at the office,
sans the physical security aspect.

If on the other hand you're running a network with out-of-the-box
software installs (i.e. you haven't spent a couple of hundred man-
hours tightening the boxes) and a shoddy firewall setup, PPTP won't
be your weakest link.
