My thanks to everyone who responded.

I think have looked at just about every syslog server out there now ; the
problem with most of them is that they only *write* to the NT event log.
I needed something I could invoke in a script to send syslog data to any
listener (preferably Unix) on UDP port 514.

The best suggestion was to use "netcat" (echo "<pri> message text | nc
1.2.3.4 514) which I like.......... as soon as I get it working !
