I wonder if this is related to the behavior I see when one shell is in a
directory that no longer exists and I perform cd commands in other
shells.  For every cd command performed in another shell, the shell
whose $PWD doesn't exist will print

  pwd: couldn't find directory entry in `..' with matching i-node
