Thanks, Abe. Without having played with it, I also would think that this algorithm would be confusing for users. The relevance score may be a nice idea, though it is arguably even more complicated.
I seem to recall that we once discussed using the position of the cursor as an indicator; if the cursor is at char0, restrict the search to strings that start with the query string. If we did not discuss it, at least I was thinking about the idea.
