FIX 5.0 SP1 offers tag 1194 ExerciseStyle for that.
FIX 4.3 offers tag 461 CFICode which allows to convey the same information in
the third character.

You asked about FIX 4.2 which does not have either field. The best alternative
to using tag 206 is to allow a field from a higher version but it depends on
your implementation. It would avoid changes when you move to a higher FIX
version.

If you look at tag 206 in version FIX 4.4 or higher, you can see that the list
of valid values has been removed. It is still present for FIX 4.2 so tag 206 is
certainly a valid option there.
