Ok, what's an LGD? It sounds like Large Guard Dog....<grin> Vanessa -------Original Message------- From: tiakd 14477 Date: 02/17/06 14:24:35 To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Fjord companion? This message is from: "tiakd 14477" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> We must have just had more aggressive bears and cougars when we lived in the Rocky mountains. Our neighbor raised llama's and had problems with mountain lions attacking them. Bears weren't detoured either and even gave my horses (and I!) heart failure several times. People who tried to use llama's to protect their sheep from mountain lions and bears, ended up with dead llamas or dead sheep. OR maybe we didn't have as aggressive of llamas - not knowing a lot about llamas, that could easily be a possibility. If you are wanting cougar or bear protection, I have had good success with a good LGD - but they aren't that great of companions for horses. :) My Arabian has been on his own on and off for a great many years. The best years of our lives together were the bonding he and I did when we were each other's buddies. In the Rocky Mountains he lived alone for 5 years (before I got 3 other horses), then when we moved to the prairies, he was alone for 5 years as a by-law in town didn't allow me to have more animals. Then we moved to a farm and he had some cow buddies, then 2 other horse buddies, and now he is with 2 steers who are his friends. He sleeps with them and follows them around. (when I say alone, I mean just no other large animals with him - he had me :) He really likes a little Jersey x Dexter steer I have - if you aren't anti-cow/beef you could raise yourself a cow to be his buddy and even get a calf out of the deal. :) I have fond memories of Bert and Ernie the llamas. When I was bull shopping one year, one farm had 2 guard llamas for their assorted animals. Those two guys were impressive and followed me everywhere, sticking their heads right in my face and staring at me with their heads cocked to the side. A tad intimidating at first (I thought they were going to try to attack me), but they were the most curious and adorable fellows you could imagine. (owners assured me they wouldn't do anything . .)
