We have this problem in dogs frequently. I will never forget the first time
I put my hands on the top dog in my breed years ago. I couldn't quite
understand why he was doing as much winning as he was from ringside until
his owner let me put my hands on him. The way he filled my hand was
extraordinary. Since then I've found that touching dogs in crucial places
has revealed dips in the topline where hair has covered things up, that legs
were more correct than markings would suggest and more. Obviously horses
have less hair to hide things but even with labrador retrievers, touch is an
important part of getting to know an animal's construction.
If anyone on the list is a horse judge, I'd be curious to hear what your
experience is of judging as it relates to this in 'real life', not as it
relates to the virtual evaluation. Is touch a part of your judging
experience with horses?

Carol,
It finally hit me - why a DVD won't work!

Sometimes the Evaluators have to feel the horse.

I remember at one of the training seminars we were shown pictures of
conformation faults - we saw a horse with a weird white marking on his leg
(not a Fjord) that made it LOOK like it was bench knee - an optical
illusion. Someone said we didn't need to worry about that with Fjords cause
of the no white - it was brought up that - two things..the stripping,
molting and hair on the legs sometimes covers what is really there. The
angle of the pastern and the angle of the shoulder should be the same (as
well as the hoof wall) and with the hair it sometimes looks like the horse
is steeper in the pasterns or shorter............thus we were told you may
have to go and feel the leg to see it - that is one of the reasons I clip
horses...to take away that wonder........

Just a thought.... I'm slow but I do think all the time.
