In our small New Mexico community, one of the 4-H judges was also the most
prolific trainer of young horses, and young riders. One day, she was the
announcer for an open breed show in the community, where many of her students
and former students (2 legged and 4 legged) were showing. One young girl,
afraid to canter her horse was assured she could continue at the trot instead
of cantering in that part of the competition. WELL, that would have worked,
except the horse she was riding was ALSO a student of this woman. So, when Zee
heard the command from "His" trainer to "lope", he did as he was told -
completely ignoring his rider's frantic commands. After all "HIS" trainer said
"lope", to heck with this beginner on his back saying trot! The rider held the
reins in her one hand, grabbed a choke hold on the saddle horn with the other
hand, and stayed on. Luckily, the announcer noticed the problem, and gave the
command "walk your horses" - and Zee switched gears before his y!
oung
rider lost it.
