I have to jump in here because I just came in from having one of the best rides I've ever had on a horse. This is a young horse, Starfire Arend, who is now owned by Beth German of Sandia Park, NM. He is by our stallion, Obelisk, and is out of our best mare, Maerta. This boy isn't even four years old, yet I am in awe of his mental presence and trainability. He forward, light to the leg and the hand, sensitive to my seat, learns quickly, has PLENTY of energy and, even at his young age, is good out on the trail (with little experience!) He has been one of the easiest horses I've ever had to start in my lifetime (100 or so of all different breeds - including a number of fjords). Interestingly enough, the mare goes back to Rei Halsnaes (her sire was MVF Ravel.) She had that cute head and great energy, but much steadiness and wisdom as well. Perhaps this came from the dam's side, as she had some good old Canadian lines going back to Buck and Kinnikinnik.

Sadly, we lost Maerta to colic last fall. This is her only offspring and he is a gelding. It is the greatest joy and sometimes the deepest sadness to be able to develop this horse. He seems to be the perfect blend of both parents, with the energy and incredible work ethic from both. Better movement than the mother yet a bit braver than his father. He is going home to Beth soon and I'm sure the match couldn't be better. He is going to be her dressage pony, and I'm sure they'll do some incredible things in the future.

It would have been so interesting to see how other offspring of this pairing would have compared. Sigh. We have three other Obey offspring that I'm currently starting. Two 2 year olds and a 3 year old. It will be interesting to see how they compare to each other as well as to Arend.

Beth
