You can buy some very nice agricultural land in MN, WI, and IA in the $1800 to $2500 per acre range, sometimes including a house, well, and outbuildings.
This kind of land won't be near the cities or resort areas and may not be on a hard surface road, but none of these issues is a liability as far as I'm concerned.
