The discussion of eating horses reminds me of my experience raising steers
to eat. I had this stark moment of awareness of the horror of raising an
animal with kindness, then killing it and eating it. I thought, what if it
were reversed: if you had a dog which was a loyal and loving dog, protected
you from burglars, slept at the foot of your bed, brought you slippers, etc.
Then one day it turns on you and invites in the rest of his pack, and eats
you. People would say, "How disgusting, what betrayal" Just talking about
it makes you think you'd been reading Stephen King. Awful. And I realized
that was my relationship with those steers. It all made me a little car
sick.
I have not become a vegetarian, but the thought of those steers and the
imaginary dog (real dogs would not stoop so low) has lingered with me.
I think better of dogs now, and have not raised more steers.
