Ellen, I have been using the "Glory Butterfly" bits which are really a type
of "pelham" with rings for a direct "snaffle" rein and a lower ring for a
leverage or curb action. The mouthpiece is solid, curved Mullen mouth . I
use it with two reins when training, the curb rein for trail, etc. It is
actually a driving bit but I use it for everything. I have a huge bit
collection, but this seems to work the best for all of my fjords. The
other fjord folks here are using them also. They are expensive, but I
think worth it. See Ray Johnson's website, which shows his Glory Liverpool
driving bits and the new Glory riding bit as well as the butterfly.

For a cheaper alternative, the mullen mouth English pelham works pretty
good, but there are problems with the curb chain pinching on these, while
the Glory bits have been constructed to prevent this.

I seem to try other bits all the time (always looking for the perfect fjord
bit) but keep going back to the Glory bits.

Jean in beautiful Fairbanks, Alaska, a gorgeous sunny day, mid to upper
30's. March is the best month of the winter up here! 10 hours and 45
minutes sunlight!

bits,I know 5%.I am wondering if there is a traditional or common bit used
for riding Fjords.I have been using a Eggbutt snaffle, but don't feel that I
have the best control that I could.I am trail riding only and have "heavy
hands".I would welcome any suggestions. Thanks,Ellen
