The "flying W" is a contentious way of teaching a horse not to bolt. Mary
Thurman can describe it better but it is a line tied to the front pastern or
pasterns, runs through the riggen and is held by the driver. When the horse
hears "whoa" and does not stop the line is jerked by the driver and the
horse falls to its knees. You can see where an expert has to do this as it
can injure the horse and driver. The horse learns quickly to avoid another
spill or spills by stopping.
