I do not understand these few times I have heard of the sudden runaway horse. Did your horse show this behavior before? Do you think it finally dawned on him that a huge monster with big whirly things was behind him? It is late in the season for bees. I do not blame you for being scared, whew. This is a situation for the "flying W" in skilled hands. It usually stops such behavior. But your idea of a well schooled driving horse sounds best to me.
