Bridget in CA asked what gaming was. I'm certainly not an authority, as my exposure has been through the 4-H horse program here in northern Idaho, and gaming is generally a horse sport that is hot and fast (which excludes me), but I will attempt to answer the question. Gaming in this area is refereed to as Gymkhana or O-Mok-See (depending on the rules used) and includes timed events; examples are barrel race, pole bending, key hole, flag race and rescue race. Possibly you have witnessed gaming at a local rodeo. Our 4-H horse program uses gaming to add some fun to more serious classes at our horse shows, and the Libby Fjord show generally includes a gaming class or two (this year we had a barrel race that was adapted to carts - last year it was a rescue race). Our wonderful Fjords perform well when gaming. Their consistency and unflappability are far more important than the fast times generally associated with this horse sport. Why not try a ribbon race (matched pairs at a lope with a ribbon between the riders), or speed ball (rider drops ball in a cut-off cone while going top speed) this week. The riders having the most fun win! Shirley Anderson.
