So he spent a weekend afternoon driving from Los Lunas to Los Trigos (a good day's journey, up and back) to do my vet check. He looked Juniper over high and low and said she's just fine. I asked him to find a flaw with her, anywhere. He didn't. Since then I've seen her evaluation scores and know there are little baby flaws in there. But she's been worth her weight in gold, and our vet check was very cheap too. OTOH, when I sold my TB that I realized was too much horse for me, the first prospective buyer had an extremely detailed prepurchase exam, where they found some awfully bad changes in her navicular bone. The poor lady spent a lot of money on that vet check, but luckily didn't buy a horse that wouldn't hold up to the job she wanted it to do. I had to drastically reduce the price of the mare. Told the next prospective buyer what her foot problems were, and the lady merrily paid for her and took her home that day!!! Go figure. I since found out that the mare's navicular bone cracked, but she's been breeding to a warmblood stallion and getting very nice foals. I guess (and certainly hope) that the stallion is passing on great hooves to her babies. I certainly would have been scared to death to breed that mare! Pamela
