MANY good horse movies out there, it just takes some judicious sifting.....
One of my all time favorites has to be "Kentucky", with Walter Brennan.
TB racing, and shows actual footage of THE Thoroughbreds of the times .....
1930's .... incredible .... in the flesh!
I recently say another Walter Brennan movie about Standardbred racing.
Same type of plot....he used to be great in racing, but had a falling out
with the wealthy racing neighbor who he hates.....and there is his
girl/boy.....makes friends with other's boy/girl....pure Hollywood classics!
I think this one was called "Spring in Indiana".
"My Friend Flicka" (I always wanted her to be mine), "Thunderhead", "The
Black Stallion", "Patton" (has the Lippazons in it), "Run Appaloosa Run"
(unbelievable footage of incredible real mountain/water race and Indian girl
with her Appy), "National Velvet" (what little girl HASN'T ridden the Pie),
"The Black Stallion", "The Man From Snowy River", "Pharlap" (mentioned
earlier....great movie!).......I will think of more. What other great
childhood horse novels have been turned into movies? I know there are more
that are escaping me at the moment. Any great driving movies out there?
"Sylvester" had Melissa Gilbert, the lead actress, doing the riding in
the head shots.....don't pick her riding apart....best to just ignore
it.....but the leg and body shots were of Karen Stives (I believe), one of
our previous 3-day Eventers on her own horse. Pretty neat to watch,
actually.....ok, the riding with the head shots of the star was iffy.
Carole Sweet / Modesto, Calif...where my newly castrated gelding,
Nattmann, is doing JUST fine!!!! Hope we can make it to Skandifest, Turlock,
next year!!!!!
