Jane, You're right on here - most 'child size' western saddles are made to go on a pony or very small - read very narrow - horse. When my grandchildren became old enough to want to ride Line - who weighs in at a hefty 1250 to 1350 pounds(draft style) - I solved the problem of a saddle for them by using an Australian saddle I have. The one I used for them is quite old and has 'English style' stirrups which just unhook from the bar. Childsize stirrups and leathers make this saddle good for the kids. If your kids want a 'cowboy' saddle, the new Australian saddles come in a western style - with horn and double cinch AND come in child's sizes. If you buy a used "Aussie" please be sure it comes with the proper double buckle cinch and the circyngle. An Aussie saddle is not safe to use without the circyngle. My grandkids like the 'ears' on the Australian saddle, as they use them for 'extra' handholds. Good luck in your hunt for a kids' saddle.
