I had 2 clay stalls with a big hole in the middle and sloping sides in 12x12
area. The hole was filled with rocks to about eight inches from the top. I
then put sawdust in the hole and shavings over the top and it was the best
arrangement I have yet had. It would be picked everyday and did not need
changing for at least three weeks. As I aged I could not do the cleaning
out and converted to rubber mats. They have worked fine except my big horse
will not lie down on the mats and has taken to sleeping outside. As he is
elderly I am not comfortable with this. My horses are only locked in if the
vet or ferrier is coming or if we are having horrible weather. I have quit
putting shavings in in the summer as they then just urinate in the stalls.
