Dear Pamela: I too have an elderly mare that had a runny eye all fall, and
winter. My regular vet subscribed ointments that were absolutely useless.
However when she became stiff and lame this spring, I trucked her to our vet
lab and the vet horse specialist flushed our her eye and then subscribed
drops for her. (Gentocin Durafilm) ,as well as subscribing Bute for her
Arthritis. I was to use the drops for 3 weeks but the dear old soul had
different ideas and would only accept the drops for 2 weeks. But the
combined eye flushing and drops must have done the trick. Her eye which was
squinty before now is totally opened up and is much better. Unfortunately,
this was a tricky procedure that I believe only a vet can do. However it is
certainly in her best interest to have this done. It made a great
difference in Duchess. Her eye literally ran all the time. Hope this
helps, Sue (Desert Storm's mom)
