I just went to a horse nutrition clinic and the vet there said something
interesting about imprinting. She felt it was valid and valuable but that
too much shouldn't be done too soon. She has seen an increase in mares
rejecting their foals as imprinting has become more common. She said that
the first hour or two is extremely important in the mare/foal relationship,
especially in a first time mare. She feels that nursing should be
established before there is too much human handling; especially if you have
a mare that has had trouble bonding with foals in the past. It made sense
to me.
