Jean -

Frida has foaled anywhere from February through May and has consistently
foaled 2 - 4 weeks after due date. She has NEVER shown any wax and up until
Sunday has always foaled between 5:30 and 10:30 PM.

I really prefer foals to be born in March so they can be old enough to put out
to pasture in May and June when it seems that most of the mares for outside
breeding seem to come in. (Also my own mares are usually bred so it's one
less thing to worry about).

This is early but I did have my mares under lights last year to bring them in
heat earlier. When Frida came into heat last February I was actually going to
breed her in March but figured she was getting older (22) and it would
probably take a little more time and effort to get her bred so I might as well
start then. Surprise! She took on that breeding. I always tell people
"Mares do not read the books". Just when you think they are a little bit
predictable - they do something to keep you on your toes.

I'm not sure how this all comes together in Alaska where there are more dark
hours than in Michigan. I am really ready for spring - the birds were singing
this morning, the weather has been warm and its foaling time EXCEPT we are
under a winter storm watch and supposed to get hit by tomorrow evening.
Ughhhhh. Oh well, it won't last for 3 months anyway.

Nancy
