some questions. I think I must be missing a very important piece to mine :-)

Has anyone on this list put up a web page with pics of our Fjords? I would
love to offer to do that if it isn't already available. When you all talk
about your Fjords it would be nice to know what they look like.

If you have a digital camera you could send me a jpg. If you have a photo I
can scan it.

what do you all think?

Hi List,
I know this is off subject, but does anyone use those electronic pest
gadgets? And do they do any good? I have traps set everywhere outside,
but still hear the little pitter patter or feet and gnawing in the attic
at night. They wake me up and then I am not very happy in the morning.
Thank goodness they do not come into our living area and only the attic.

I use an Aussie saddle - and boy, do I ever love it after the Western
ones I used growing up! If you think you're missing a piece, I'm
guessing that you only have one girth instead of the two, right? If
so, that (the overgirth) is a REALLY important piece! Feel free to
e-mail me directly with your questions - I'm not an expert, but I did
a lot of research before I bought my used saddle.

Hi,

Just as a passing note of interest, while living in Libby, I had the pleasure
of meeting an older gentleman affectionately known as 'Doc'. Can't remember
his last name for the life of me. It was a number of years ago. He would
come by occasionally to see the horses and visit
.

What an interesting man! He was a scientist and had worked for the
government at NASA among many other things. He told me that he had, along
with, I believe it was, a German scientist, invented heavy water. I had, and
still don't exactly know, no idea what that was. He had so many colorful
stories to tell.

He had married the daughter of the king (is that what they call THE main man
there?) of Arabia after having worked there inventing electric generation
using heavy water somehow. As a wedding gift they were given an Arabian mare
and stallion.

He also told me of many things he had invented for the space rockets while
working for NASA.

I often wondered if this guy wasn't involved in a government 'protection'
project, being hidden away there in Libby?

Ruthie, did you ever meet Doc? Don't know whether he is even still alive?

I've know a few "Docs" in my time Gayle, a kind of a generic moniker I
guess... there was one in Troy who is now in a nursing home, but he didn't
seem the type =))

Sounds like your Doc was a very interesting person, hope he wrote his
memoirs.

If anyone is interested in reading about the resistance in Norway during
WWII, I would suggest the book "WE DIE ALONE" by David Howarth. It is an
unbelievable (but true) story of one man who had to escape from Norway
after his resistance group was discovered by the Germans. I couldn't put
the book down once I started it.

The Germans did, however, bomb Norway. David Klove showed me a fragment of
bomb dropped on his farm. He said the Germans believed there were weapons
stored there. Voss, where he lives, was an area of strong resistence to the
Germans. I asked if they were actually holding the weapons. He said yes!
He still, 50 years later, strongly resented the Germans for those days.

This message is from: "Birgit Mortensen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Hello again!

Saturday last week I wrote some information to the list about Calenders, but it
has not appeared. I try once more.

The most beautifull Fjordhorse Calender I have seen is produced in Germany. I
saw it for the first time 3 years ago, when I was visiting the Equitana in
Germany. The last two years we have been selling the German Calender in
Denmark, and at our Jubilee in September next years Calender was sold.

It is big and glossy and consists of 13 pictures (a front page and the 12
months). The photographer is very good and the horses are shown out in the
nature (as far as I remember the pictures are taken in the southers part of
Germany/Austria). People, saddles and equipment of any kind (cannot remember
the correct English word for it, sorry, but I think you will understand) are
not allowed.

In September the photographers visited Denmark and we found some beautifull
horses in typical Danish sceneries. Of course we hope to see some of the
pictures in the 2003 Calender.

You can find the seller in Germany through the German associations website,
chose 'links' and when you are looking at the list with the links go to
'Sonstige Fjord-Websites' and find 'Fjord-Fan-Shop-Bayern'. There is a picture
(not so nice as most of the months) of the front page of this years Calender.
The price is 29 DM, but since the Calender is a big one you must add an unknown
amount in postal cost.

Best regards from Denmark

Birgit

This message is from: "Birgit Mortensen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Hello list!

Early Friday (danish time) I wrote to the list about the danish family names,
but obviously it never reached its destination. I try again in case you are
still interested:

Just to confirm that ?Pedersen? is a very common family name in Denmark.
When the inhabitants in Denmark were counted about a month ago the total number
was 5.363.718. And yes, Denmark is a very small country, we know it.

The most common family name in Denmark is Jensen. When this year started the
name was used by 312.396 persons living in Denmark. Number 2 on the list was
Nielsen, number 3 Hansen and number 4 was Pedersen (used by 191.144 persons).
So in Denmark you don?t have to spell it ? and though! We have a very similar
family name, Petersen, number 11 on the list and used by 95.232 persons. So now
and then the question ?with a d or a t? is asked!

In Denmark a lot of things is counted, but if you ask me the question ?how many
fjords do you have in Denmark? I must admit, that I don?t know. When we
celebrated our 50 years studbook jubilee 10 years ago we estimated that the
number was 10.000. At this years jubilee we haven?t been talking about numbers
of fjords, but we still have many.

And speaking of jubilee: we had three wonderful days with visitors from most
fjord-countries in Europe (and 4 persons from the US too ? hope to see you
again). 338 persons attended our jubilee dinner and I think everybody had great
fun. More than 100 fjordhorses were evaluated (our neighbour countries Sweden
and Germany had brought horses too) and in a show other close to 100
fjordhorses showed all the things a fjordhorse can do. We must get some
pictures at our website, when they are there, I will send a new message.

Many greetings from Denmark

Birgit

(Family name Mortensen number 20 at the Top-20 list)

E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

P.S.
I could add that the reason we have so many family names ending upon 'sen' is
that till about 150 years ago it was a tradition especially among the farmers
to convert a first name to a family name in the next generation.

E.g.: a farmer had the name Jens Pedersen. His sons got the family name Jensen
(you can translate it 'son of Jens').
The sons first names could be Lars (his sons would have the family name Larsen)
or Anders (his sons would have the family name Andersen) and so on.

If the children were girls they had a family name telling that they were
daughters of .....
E.g.: Jens Pedersens daughter got the family name Jensdatter (datter is danish
for daughter) and so on.

However this way of making names was forbidden by a dabusg law in 1856.

This is from Joel Harman.

Nice to see others state that fjords are equines & need to be treated as
such. They need training.
It is an injustice to the breed to neglect this. The best pedigree in
the will not overcome shortcomings in training.

We should all learn about age appropriate training & see that our horses
receive it.
