Jean: Our horses start to shed their winter coats right after the winter
solstice and finally finish shedding sometime around the first part of
June. I think (read..."hope")they keep their summer coats long enough to
look sleek at the Blue Earth show, which is the third week of July. I
believe they start growing their winter coats the latter part of August,
and ours grow thick, but not long- winter coats. As someone on this list
so aptly described them as "looking like dandelions gone to seed" in winter.

I just have to insert a mini-brag here.....On the 4th of July our local
saddle club had its annual Fun Day at our Hockey Arena(we don't have a
regular arena, eh). All of the events are speed events such as; barrels,
pole weaving, keyhole race, etc.....My big draft-type mare Vedas (14.3HH,
1200 lbs) and I took at least three third places this year! Yea! Last year
we were looked on as a novelty - the old lady on her "draft-pony", but this
year we were looked on as competitors. We took a third in Barrels, Pole
Weaving and Trail class for sure, and I believe one other class, but I
don't remember which one.(I'll have to wait until Wednesday at our meeting
to find out). We were racing against QHs and Arab/crosses. They even gave
us a rating of 7.0 on the Richter Scale as we came thundering down the
arena at a full gallop;-) My husband Jon, said he was proud of us for doing
so well against the "speed" horses. I was proud of my big girl too. We
will be in the barrel race at Blue Earth this July and I hope we do as well.
