I know my vet did not want to use shavings or sawdust due to the baby's
getting it up their nostrils etc.. This came up when I was going to turn my
pregnant mare out in the indoor when I wasn't there and he was also concerned
about the sand in it.
Ended up she had the foal 2 weeks early out in her regular field all by
herself and everyone was fine. Got to the farm that morning to a tall
spindling running his little head off colt with Mom charging along.
