This message is from: Jean Ernest:   "All four of my Fjords show regular
hoof rings, showing the difference in growth (or no growth) in the winter
months and the burst of growth in the spring. They have never been lame,
it is NOT an indication of founder. "

I agree Jean, hoof rings are indicators of changes in a horses life:
seasonal as well as physiological. They can indicate a laminitic episode,
and if it is severe enough, there will also be internal changes in the
hoof, and possibly the sole will bottom out & drop as well. I have seen
severe "dishig out" with laminitic horses as well. But then again, a
change in location & feed or supplements can also create hoof rings.

My mare Alycia had a terrible bout with Pigeon Fever/Dryland Distemper
late last summer and into fall. She literally was a total invalid for
about 2.5 months, losing alot of weight & condtion. All this and she is
carrying her first foal.

Well, when I trimmd her feet 2 weeks ago, I really noticed the very large
& distinct growth ringsabout 1/3 down the hoof from the coronary band.
It told the 'story' of her  recent illness.
