Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -

Regarding these horses in Alberta that we sought to save by posting the
situation on the Digest - I'm concerned at the tone the discussion has
taken. Someone used the word "scam", which is very insulting.

To set the record absolutely straight - I heard about these horses in
Alberta destined for slaughter through a young woman (Alicia) from our
village who is now working at a race stable in Alberta. A couple of days
ago, she called her friend, Jaimie, who is our Stable Manager and told her
the story. - She said it was a meat ranch, and she'd heard about 3 horses
there and because of her past association with Fjords had gone to see them.
She said she was surprised to find them there as they were decent looking,
apparently well-cared for, and their manes were properly cut.

Jaimie and I were both upset thinking of Fjords ending up as meat, and for
that reason I posted the situation on the Digest. --

Not an hour afterwards, I got a call from Linda Bailey who said they were in
their truck headed in that direction and maybe could rescue the horses. She
asked about the price and I told her as far as I knew the racher wanted
$1500 CN apiece. She said that was high for meat, and I said I had no idea,
and that it would be up to her to negotiate with the man who owns them.

I don't know a thing about this business of Alicia wanting any sale to go
through her. I do know that she feels the man is a respectable rancher,
even though he deals in horse meat rather than cattle meat. --- Alicia
mentioned something to Jaimie about not wanting to cause problems for the
meat rancher.
I believe she went to school with his daughter at Oland College.

In any case, her motives, like ours, were to save the lives of these
Fjordhorses. NOTHING ELSE! And I really resent people bantering about
words like "scam" in any context that concerns Beaver Dam Farm. - (It was
someone other than Linda Bailey who mentioned "scam") - People really ought
to be careful about what they say. When you've worked as long and hard as
we have to develop a good reputation, you can't take such aspersions lying
down.
