This message is from: "Arthur Rivoire" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -
I wonder if I could survey the membership of the Fjord Digest. I'd very much like to have answers to the following questions: Possibly some of these answers could come from the NFHR Survey done recently of the entire NFHR membership. Mike? #1 - Do you consider yourself a serious breeder? #2 - Do you consider yourself a breeder? #3 - Do you own more than three mares? #4 - Do you have more than two foals per year? #5 - How many foals per year? #6 - Do you own a stallion? #7 - Do you own more than one stallion? How many? #8 - Do you own a Blue Ribbon evaluated stallion? Note: (There should not be any other kind of stallion) #9 - How did you choose the stallion you own and use? 10 - Do you consider yourself knowledgeable about Fjord bloodlines? #11 - Do you know the sire, dam & dam's sire of every horse on the farm -- including geldings? #12 - Have you attended Evaluations in the U.S. ? #13 - Have you attended Fjord Evaluations in Europe ? #14 - Have you considered purchasing a Fjord breeding stallion? #15 - Given the fact that Fjord stud colts, whose owners rightly or wrongly think are stallion material, are priced somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 (not a huge spread compared to other breeds, and not a huge spread considering future stud fees of between $800 - $1200) . . . Would you select the best bred, best quality colt you could find, or would you consider the price when selecting a prospective breeding stallion? #16- Do you recognize that there are definite quality differences in Fjords relating to how the horses are bred? #17 - Did you study ( before buying) the pedigrees of the horses you've purchased, paying attention to -- imported stock? Highly regarded sire lines? Close breeding? #18 - If you saw Beaver Dam Farm's ad in the recent Fjord Herald . . . Did you think about the breeding that went into producing a colt like BDF Titan, the foal pictured in our ad? #19 - Are you at all concerned about Fjord breeding in North America? #20 - Are you concerned that too many poor quality stallions are used for breeding? #21 - Are you concerned that too many very good colts who could be important breeding stallions are being gelded? These are all questions that greatly concern me, and I would very much appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to express your opinions editorially, rather than answering question by question.
