My Gus has a fairly nice trot but for someone used to riding big horses,
they would consider it choppy.......it is a 'pony' stride, but
smooth.....now his canter used to be really bad, but with work, it has
gotten back that rocking horse quality......

I use a Passier dressage saddle and it works just fine

Yesterday I went to ride my first Fjord, a 14 year old mare, with my
trail saddle, an original McClellan. Gaits - the mare was
ridden and trained English (dressage) and seemed to have short, choppy
strides, which I primarily attributed to her being ridden English and was
exacerbated by the speed of the trot in English (her canter was OK, but
not the best). The breeder said it was because she is a Fjord and they
are all that way
