We had a male donkey here for a year or so -- he was wonderful with
people, pulled a cart like a champ, loved the mares and foals -- and tried to
KILL any male horse he could reach. On the few times I tried turning him out
with a gelding, he attacked by going for the throat. If he got a good hold,
he would hang on like a snapping turtle until we ran out there and beat him
off. He once grabbed a huge 17-hand Standardbred gelding by the throat and
wouldn't let go -- I will never forget the look of sheer terror on that big
guy's face until we got there to rescue him. The donkey was 11 hands, by the
way, and afraid of nothing. His name was Macaroni, and his bad behavior was
known as a "Big Mac attack."
We still keep a female donkey, she is just wonderful. We can turn her
out with anybody, and she is the best baby-sitter on the farm. What a love!
