Just needed to brag a bit, and figured you guys would understand.

This weekend my unregistered, formerly grossly overweight, bought-at-auction-in-April Fjord mare went to her first competition, a one-day driving trial. This competition consisted of a dressage test, cones course and a 5.8 km marathon with four obstacles.

(Drum roll, please)

I'm so proud to say that she performed a decent dressage test, her first time ever in a dressage ring (put us in 2nd place). Never batted an eye at either the judge's canopy or potted plants. This was the first time she'd ever even seen cones, and after hopping sideways going through the first set (killing a cone), she settled down. Two more balls came down during our go, dropping us to 4th place, but she'd been trying very hard to understand what I wanted. Finally, there was the marathon. By the time we got to the third hazard, the light bulb seemed to have switched on, and she just followed my reins without question. Although at the last km she was running out of gas, we still managed to come in on time, which clinched first place in our division!

I didn't breed or raise or even begin the training on this mare, but she's got a wonderful mind and is a joy to work with. I'm looking forward to improving our work as a team.

Yay Fjords!

Cheers!

Karen

PS - She also had a very "cool" haircut and got lots of attention from the non-Fjordie folks.
