Hi Julie,
We have vaccinated the whole herd (14 horses, yearlings on up) with
the WNV, with NO reactions of any kind. Not even sore necks!
Breeding hobbles do scare me, too. I was present at a breeding many
years ago where a recalcitrant mare was hobbled for breeding. The stallion
slid off her back and got a foot caught in the hobble -- couldn't get loose.
He fell, the mare fell on top of him, both horses were twisted up in a knot,
and the mare managed to step on the poor stallion's -- ahem. Anyway, it took
a very brave attendant to jump into the middle of the fray and cut the hobble
with a pocket knife before the horse could get on their feet. Whew! What a
mess.
