Hello Everybody from Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -

I'm not sure whether it's a fluke or not, but this summer, we're seeing a significant difference in the reasons people are buying Fjords.

In the past, customers seemed more likely to buy a mare because of the investment value of a mare who can breed, and therefore, possibly recoup the initial investment. -- In the past, mares were always the easier to sell than geldings. -- Given a mare and gelding on the Sales List, both of them of equal quality and training, it was always the mare who sold first as she was perceived to be more financially valuable.

This year, for the first time, people are looking for trained geldings. Of the mature geldings we've sold this summer, all have been well trained to ride and/or drive. . A lot of people were interested in them, and each one sold fairly quickly. -- For example, we sold two wonderful Gjest sons a couple of months ago. One a five year old, was well trained to ride and drive. The other gelding, well trained to ride. -- They sold easily. Two other geldings, Felix sons, sold easily and quickly. One trained to ride and drive, and the other trained to ride, and left with us for driving training. Two other geldings trained to ride and drive also sold ickly. --

The mares we have for sale are two 6 yr. olds and a 4 yr. old. -- All of them are really wonderful mares, but came to us with minimal training under saddle. None of them are as yet trained to drive. -- The two 6 yr. olds had been bred which naturally interrupts the training.

In most other performance breeds, the geldings are the most desirable to buyers looking for a using horse. Mares are thought of as less stable in the competitive arena, particularly when in heat (every 21 days). -- I'm wondering if what we've seen this year at Beaver Dam Farm is signaling that Fjords are now (finally) thought of as performance horses. If so, this is an exciting and very important milestone for the Fjord breed in North America.

At this writing, we have three great mares still available. -- People ought to buy horses that fit their needs. Horses that will do what they want them to do. Horses that fit their abilities. Each of these mares is quite different - one from the other. I'll describe them as fully as I can.

PEVENSIE -- 6 yr. old mare. Proven broodmare. -- Sired by Caspian, son of the Dutch Elite stallion, Myrstein. -- Would you like to own a horse that is as close as it's possible to get to being totally BOMBPROOF? -- Pevensie is that! -- Would you like to own a horse that can be ridden bareback by kids with only a halter and leadrope? -- Pevensie is that! -- Would you like to own a real confidence builder? Pevensie is that! -- Would you like to own a horse with legs and feet as hard as iron? A horse that's never needed shoes and whose feet are perfect? Pevensie is that! -- Wouldn't you love to own a horse that's absolutely problem-free both mentally and physically? Well, as far as we can tell after working her for four months, Pevensie is exactly that! --- Pevensie has been ridden 6 days a week since she arrived here in May. She goes on the trail with only a halter and reins. -- Everyone who rides her marvels at how steady the mare is. -- At 65 years of age, and after breeding, importing, training, and selling Fjords since 1979, I'm a veteran. I know a good Fjordhorse when I see one, and Pevensie is that. -- Whoever gets this mare will thank their lucky stars every day that goes by. -- She's totally healthy -- Totally uncomplicated --- Absolutely steady as a rock! -- $10,500 -- Since it's late in the year, there may be a little "wiggle room".

VALENA --- 6 yr. old mare. Proven broodmare. -- Sired by the fabulous Flotren! -- This mare is as PRETTY as any Fjord you've ever seen. She has an incomparably beautiful head with huge, soft eyes and to top it off . . . . a crimped, wavy, long forelock. -- "My Pretty Pony" is what Valena is all about. But, n ot only is she gorgeous, she's also as close to BOMBPROOF as any horse will get. === Nothing but nothing fazes this young mare. -- She's been in professiional training with us for four months and works well for everybody both in the ring and on the trail. She is the dependable one we choose when we have a beginner rider. -- Valena is so dead calm that she can be 100% relied on. ------ But, that's not all! -- Valena also has a pedigree full of the big name stallions in the breed, both in Europe and North America. -- There are more famous horses in this mare's pedigree than is usual. -- Valena has the perfect temperament for a driving orse. -- In fact, the mare is made to be a lovely carriage horse. I can just see her in an antique vehicle. There won't be any prettier sites at the largest pleasure show. -- Valena is so unconcerned about outside stimulus that I predict she could be trained to drive in two months flat. $14,000 - Talk to us. It's late in the season. We might be able to do something on the price.

YSBET - 4 yr. old mare sired by Ronaldo (imported from Holland) and out of Rifona (imported from Holland) -- The sire, Ronaldo, is in Atlanta, competing in dressage against very high quality Warmbloods and doing very very well. -- The dam, Rifona, is gorgeous and wonderfully quiet. -- Ysbet is quiet and athletic. She's a little mare, 13.3 hands. -- She's little, but a really big mover! An elegant mover! -- What this mare needs is a smallish woman dressage rider. -- Or, of course, a young girl. Ysbet has a great temperament. She's done everything we've asked during her four months training at Beaver Dam Farm. She's been ridden by a variety of riders in the ring and on the trail. -- She's a no-problem mare with a lot of talent for dressage. -- Ysbet's movement is correct , regular, rhythmic, and fluid. She has lovely freedom in her shoulders and hindquarters. -- She's a real dressage prospect in a small package. -- This young mare has no problems of any sort. She's willing and eager to please. -- Ysbet is wonderfully athletic and we'd love to find her a performance home. The ideal home and situation for Ysbet would be a smallish woman dressage rider ---- A child rider ---- A Pony Club rider, as Ysbet is as handy in games as she is ideal in dressage. $14,000 -- As it's late in the season, we're open to discussion about price.

We have one more week of Riding & Driving Vacations. This week with five guests - 2 riders and 3 drivers. -- One couple did two weeks with us in July, purchased a mare, and are now returning for another week. -- These people who are from St. Louis, will be renting our newly renovated Carriage House Loft apartment, and I must say it turned out to be the cutest, most romantic little apartment in the world. -- Arthur and I wish we were staying there ourselves. Of course, it will be available to our Nova Scotia Riding & Driving guests all next summer starting mid June and running until the end of September.

Best Regards, Carol Rivoire
