My mares like privacy when they poop. Part of their run in shed is a semi-enclosed stall. I discovered that they keep the shed area clean by going in the stall to take care of business! Never a drop of poop where they eat and sleep. Of course, they go outside too, but I find this arrangement amusing since they didn't keep the shed clean at the other farm.
