I have felt "real cresty necks" and they are hard and the whole crest is
involved. My Gunnar has a large neck and it is soft to the bone. I do not do
his mane over the winter months. We are having heavy winds and rain with
the temps in the forties and lower. So he is fed three times a day and on
pasture all 24 but little if any grass. As mentioned, I feed local and
Eastern WA grass hay (somewhat stronger than local) and he gets Nutri lite
