Has anyone ever devised a good system for letting a rider know when s/he is
balancing on the reins? Maybe a piece of yard that takes up a loop in the
rein, that would break with too much pressure? Or some kind of bell on a
piece of elastic that would warn when there was too much pressure, or sudden
pressure.

Try exercises on a lounge line. Or with out the reins... Richard Shrake has
some great balance exercises. Before him Sally Swift taught riding
exercises for a balanced seat. Both have books and tapes on balance. A good
coach eye will tell you... if you do not have a coach, then ride at the
trot, posting and sitting alternatively with out reins... (of course in an
arena or round pen.)

Hope this helps,
